LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Lafayette’s first baby of 2011 was born at 3:45 a.m. Holly Renee Nelson is the first in many other ways as well.
Holly Renee Nelson is Lafayette’s New Year’s Baby. Being the first baby of the New Year isn’t her only first. She is her parents’ first child, her grandparents’ first grand-baby, and the first New Year’s baby born at the new Saint Elizabeth East campus.
“It’s pretty neat because all of our friends joked about it, just because her due date was the 31st, but we never thought it would actually happen. And than it was 3:45 in the morning and they were like ‘You have the New Year baby!” And we said, ‘Really? It’s 3:45 in the morning.’ It’s pretty neat though,” said mother Andrea Smith.

Father Jason Nelson said his daughter had to fight for the New Year’s baby title though.
“Apparently it was kind of a race. There were three at ten centimeters and pushing when we had her. So she won the race I guess,” said Nelson.
Smith and Nelson both believe their daughter will continue to come out ahead for the rest of her life. The new parents agree this is only the beginning of Holly Renee Nelson’s journey. They’re not quite sure what the future holds, but they’re excited.
“We have no idea what to expect from new parenthood. No idea! We’re just looking forward to starting our new family,” said Nelson.
Smith and Nelson were given a gift basket by St. Elizabeth Hospital in honor of their baby’s position as the hospital’s first baby of the New Year.
